- Restoring File and Folder Backups with the SiteBackup Agent
- Browsing a File and Folder Backup with the SiteBackup server
Overview
Since file and folder backups can't be restored using the central SiteBackup interface, they must instead be restored using the SiteBackup Agent or rescue media. However, file and folder backups can be browsed using the SiteBackup server for individual file and folder recovery from the file and folder backup.
Restoring File and Folder Backups with the SiteBackup Agent
First, launch the SiteBackup Agent on the system where the file and folder backup will be restored. In the SiteBackup Agent, select the 'Existing Backups' tab, then select 'File and Folder':
If no file and folder backups are shown in this tab, select 'Browse for a backup file...' and use the Explorer window to navigate to where the file and folder backups are located:
Selecting 'Open' will then display the selected file and folder backups in the 'Existing Backups' tab:
Click 'Restore' to restore the selected file and folder backup. In the window that opens, the file and folder structure can be expanded to navigate through the different files and folders that were backed up. Use the checkboxes next to each file and folder to select what will be restored:
The next page of the wizard is used to specify the restore settings and destination:
Option | Description |
Original Location | This option will restore the files and folders to the same location where they were created. |
New Location | This will choose a new destination folder where the selected files and folders will be restored. |
Parent folders to restore |
When restoring to a new location, this allows you to select which parent folders in the restore hierarchy are copied to the new location. '\' - If all selected files to restore are in the same backup folder then this will copy the files directly to the new location. If files are in multiple folders then the contents of the common parent folder is copied, including the folders containing the restored files. You can select any folder in the hierarchy, restoring to D:\Downloads for example. |
File replace option |
This specifies whether all files in the destination are replaced when performing a restore, or only files that are different. |
Restore folder create and modified dates |
This will restore the original file and folder create and modified dates. If this is not selected, create and modified dates will reflect the time the restore was performed. |
Restore NTFS permissions |
This option will restore the file and folder's original NTFS permissions when restoring to an NTFS formatted destination. If this option is unchecked, the restored files and folders will inherit the permissions of the parent directory. |
The final page of the wizard displays a summary of the restore that is about to take place:
Select 'Finish' to start the restore.
Browsing a File and Folder Backup with the SiteBackup server
Although SiteBackup cannot remotely restore a file and folder backup to an agent, SiteBackup does have the ability to browse backups for individual file and folder recovery.
First, navigate to the 'Repositories' page of SiteBackup.
On this page, select the repository where the backup, that will be browsed, is located, then select 'Browse':
If there are multiple repositories, the relevant repository that contains backups for a particular computer can be easily accessed in the 'Repository Quick Info' tab of the expanded agent view on the 'Computers' page of SiteBackup:
In the repository browser, select the computer whose file and folder will be browsed. The table on the right of the window displays the available backups for the selected computer, the columns in this table can be filtered and sorted to make finding a particular backup easier:
The arrow on the left of the image can be used to view the action buttons, select 'Open Image':
The 'Image Browser' window will then open, displaying a file system view of the disk(s) and partition(s) that were included in the image at the time of creation:
The tree on the left-hand side of the browser can be used to view the different partitions and folders that have been included in the image. Files and folders can be selected using the checkbox shown next to each item, once at least one file or folder has been selected, the 'Download' button will become active.
Selecting 'Download' will open a window that displays the number of files that will be downloaded and the total size of the download:
Selecting 'Download' will download the files via the browser that is being used to access SiteManager Platform.
