Running an Elevated Command Prompt


Overview

When troubleshooting errors, it will often be necessary to open the Windows Command Prompt with elevated privileges. This runs the command prompt using the generally highest privileges and was introduced by Windows Vista User Account Control (UAC). 

The steps to run a command prompt with elevated privileges are generally consistent across Windows operating systems. However, for specific steps, please see the links below:

- Windows 11

- Windows 10

- Windows 8

- Windows 7 and Vista


Windows 11

  1. In the Windows search bar, search 'Command Prompt' or 'CMD'.
  2. Command Prompt will be displayed on the right-hand pane of the search bar.
  3. Select 'Run as administrator'.


Windows 10

  1. In the Windows search bar, search 'Command Prompt' or 'CMD'.
  2. Command Prompt will be displayed on the right-hand pane of the search bar.
  3. Select 'Run as administrator'.


Windows 8

  1. If the system is not at the Windows Start screen, press the Windows key.
  2. Type 'Command Prompt' or 'CMD', a search bar will appear and display the 'Command Prompt' application.
  3. Right-click 'Command Prompt', then select 'Run as administrator'.


Windows 7 and Vista

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. In the Windows search bar, search 'Command Prompt' or 'CMD'.
  3. Right-click 'Command Prompt', then select 'Run as administrator'.
