What is Golden Image Deployment?

Golden image deployment is the process of creating an image of a pre-configured system (called a reference computer) that includes a particular operating system, settings, and a set of applications that will be deployed to multiple endpoints. Golden image deployment simplifies the process of rapidly setting up systems or resetting systems to a clean state.

For example, to configure a laptop for a new employee, an IT admin may need to install Windows, configure the settings for that user, and install the software that the user needs. This can all be streamlined with a single operating system golden image deployment.

How Does the Deployment Kit Work?

The Deployment Kit enables up to five technicians to create a technician's rescue media. This is a bootable media that can be used to create and deploy golden images. An internet connection is required to install the Deployment Kit and to create the technician's rescue media; however, once the rescue media has been created, the rest of the deployment can be performed entirely offline, not even requiring a local area network connection.

For large-scale golden image deployment, we also offer a centralized image deployment solution called Macrium SiteDeploy, described here.

The start to end steps to perform a golden image deployment with the Deployment Kit are:

  1. Install the Deployment Kit
  2. Create a technician's rescue media
  3. Prepare a reference computer
  4. Create a golden image of the reference computer
  5. Deploy the golden image to the target endpoints
  6. (Optionally) Streamline the deployment process with an auto-restore XML file
